The New Benchmark in Strategy Games Is Here: Civilization VII Has Arrived!

Civilization VI veterans have finally been rewarded with Civ VII—why did it take so long? Of course, it’s still as intensely time-consuming as ever [Oops!]. Below are some gameplay impressions (no direct comparison to Civ VI here; that’ll be a dedicated separate post).

Civilization VII remains a game well-suited for female players—its visuals are refined, and even within the strategy genre, you can still enjoy the joy of building structures. It supports both single-player and multiplayer modes (you can play with friends too~).

Core Gameplay

A turn-based strategy game that weaves together the historical trajectories of various nations. A full campaign spans three eras: Classical, Exploration, and Early Modern. (I jumped straight into playing without reading the intro, and was surprised when the game suddenly ended upon reaching the modern era—it felt like there weren’t enough eras.)

Players start from scratch, exploring procedurally generated maps, competing for resources and Wonders. By founding cities and advancing through technology and culture, you optimize your civilization’s development and ultimately achieve victory through diverse paths: military conquest, scientific colonization, cultural influence, religious conversion, or diplomatic maneuvering.

In the game, you can produce buildings, units, conduct research, and construct Wonders—each structure has its own unique traits and gameplay functions. Across the eras, you can choose to develop along a continuous historical lineage—for example, I started with Confucius, then continued with the Ming and Qing dynasties in the Exploration and Early Modern eras. Of course, you’re free to try other civilizations too; each comes with distinct bonuses and characteristics, offering rich variability.

The overall difficulty isn’t too high, and the experience never feels overly complex. One key tip: always keep an eye on era progression. Your top priority should be completing your Legacy Path—I was so focused on waging war that I didn’t realize the era had ended and lost without even noticing.

Special Note

The Civilization series is notorious for time distortion. Save often and play in sessions—otherwise, you might start at 6 a.m. and look up to find it’s still 6 a.m.!
