Kazuhisa Hashino, the core director who defined and reshaped the modern Persona series, has taken a step back from direct involvement in the development of this iconic IP—known for blending high school life with demon hunting—since the last mainline entry, Persona 5 Royal.

After directing Persona 3, Persona 4, Persona 5, and Catherine, Hashino decided to establish a new subsidiary under publisher Atlus called Studio Zero (operating alongside P-Studio), which recently released the critically acclaimed Metaphor: ReFantazio. This move also signifies that he is no longer deeply involved in the creation of the Persona series as he once was.
“The younger team members—those who joined after me—are now leading P-Studio’s projects,” Hashino candidly told Game Informer. “I’m mostly observing their progress from the sidelines. In that sense, I haven’t been deeply involved in the series since P5.”
However, as P-Studio and Studio Zero share the same office space, the RPG maestro hasn’t completely disconnected. “On Atlus’s office floor, the teams working on Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, and our own Metaphor: ReFantazio all operate in the same open environment without any physical barriers,” Hashino added. “Even through indirect contact, observing what other teams are creating continues to inspire us. Creatively speaking, we’re not entirely isolated—so fans can rest assured. While I can’t disclose specific plans at this stage, there is indeed this level of ongoing exchange between teams.”
The next project from Atlus’s hit franchise is the remake Persona 4: Reincarnation. Although there’s no official word yet on Persona 6, next year marks the series’ 30th anniversary…
