Final Fantasy XIV Players Seek Workarounds for Persistent Server Disconnection Issues

Although Final Fantasy XIV received a hotfix update on Christmas Day to address several bugs and issues, players continue to experience disconnections specifically affecting North American servers. However, some players have already identified temporary workarounds to mitigate the problem while it persists.

The Christmas hotfix was released one week after the global launch of Patch 7.4, “In the Depths of the Mist.” This patch advances the story toward the upcoming expansion, version 8.0, and includes the final chapter of the popular alliance raid series “Arcadion.”

On Christmas Eve, the Final Fantasy XIV servers went offline temporarily to deploy the hotfix. They came back online around 3 a.m. local time on Christmas Day, requiring players to download a small patch. This update resolved the “MissingNo” glitch—which had caused an unnamed level 1 deer to wander through the Coerthas Western Highlands—returning the now-infamous creature to its proper location. The patch also fixed job-specific glamour issues for Summoner and Scholar, as well as corrected display errors in certain gear set glamour windows.

Despite Square Enix’s recent efforts, server instability continues to cause random disconnections for some players. While the Christmas hotfix did resolve server-crash-related issues tied to retainers and space exploration content, the current disconnection problems are primarily concentrated in North American data centers. Since November, servers located in California have intermittently exhibited these issues.

Although initial reports suggested that North American servers were hit by another DDoS attack following Patch 7.4, some players believe the situation may not be entirely attributable to external attacks. During large-scale disconnection events affecting data centers such as Aether, Primal, Crystal, or Dynamis, not all players are forcibly logged out. Although the North American data center is physically located in the Sacramento area, each user connects through different network nodes maintained by NTT, a Japanese telecommunications company and Square Enix partner. Reports indicate that PlayStation users appear less affected compared to PC and Xbox players, though this hasn’t stopped the community from actively tracking server anomalies.

With the final tier of the Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail alliance raid scheduled to launch on January 6, some players have begun exploring potential solutions to stabilize their connections. On Twitter, content creator iTrolledU posted demonstrations showing that virtual private networks (VPNs) like NordVPN and ExpressVPN can help maintain game connectivity during server instability. Their daily-updated threads also list rerouting services such as ExitLag, Cloudflare WARP, and Mudfish. Given that high-difficulty raids demand consistent connectivity, it remains to be seen when Square Enix will fully resolve the North American server issues.
