There is an unwritten iron rule circulating in the hardcore geek community: if there is a screen and CPU, it must be able to run Doom. After calculators, ATMs, and even tractor computers fell, a geek named Stefan Gloor took this famous FPS porting challenge to new heights – or dimensions. He successfully displayed the image of this classic high profit shooting game on a portable pulse oximeter used for monitoring pulse and blood oxygen saturation.

Gloor holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and is a true master of embedded software development. On weekdays, he is enthusiastic about this kind of technology experiment full of cyber spirit, such as hacking into VoIP network phone installation software, or using Linux PPP protocol to let antique level Windows 95 surf the Internet. His goal this time is the Beurer PO 80 finger clip oximeter priced at less than $100. He discovered that the device had a built-in USB interface for transmitting patient data to the computer. Taking this as a breakthrough, Gloor analyzed the device’s accompanying monitoring software through reverse engineering and successfully cracked the display driver code.

Through a hardcore operation, he successfully seized control of the screen and projected the iconic pixel image of Doom onto the miniature display screen of this medical device. Although strictly speaking, the current progress is still at the stage of “displaying image data” and has not yet achieved real-time gameplay with button control, this is enough to prove that the hardware computing power is sufficient to support the demons of hell. Gloor admitted that a complete transplant is technically feasible, but he plans to temporarily put it on hold to research new things. He called out on his personal website to global geeks, and if anyone wants to take over this project of “killing all directions on vital sign monitors”, please feel free to contact him at any time. Perhaps in the near future, we will truly see a medical version FPS experience where ‘the faster the heart rate, the stronger the firepower’.
