Former Nintendo CEO asserts: ‘The console war is over’

Former Nintendo President Reggie Fils Aime recently gave a heavyweight opinion on the current state of the gaming industry in a deep interview after retirement. He clearly pointed out that the long-standing “game console war” has ended, marking a fundamental shift in Microsoft’s strategy.

Reggie analyzed in an interview that with the release of core exclusive games such as Halo on PlayStation, Microsoft has essentially transformed into a “large third-party publisher that produces some hardware at the same time”. He believes that this means Microsoft is no longer directly competing with Sony and Nintendo in the same dimension. He further suggested that if Microsoft wants its games to reach the widest audience, it should allow more Xbox games (not just Minecraft) to be released on the Nintendo Switch platform.

When the interviewer reviewed how fierce competition between PS3 and Xbox 360 gave rise to innovation (such as motion control), they expressed concern that the market may stagnate due to a lack of competition. Reggie strongly agrees with this, emphasizing that “competition can bring innovation and ultimately benefit consumers”, and admitting that the pace of innovation in breakthrough new content in the industry seems to have slowed down, which concerns him.

In the new era where the ‘host war’ has come to an end, Reggie sees the possibility of collaboration. He specifically pointed out that Nintendo has astonishing efficiency in game development, such as the massive game ‘Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’, whose file volume is only about half that of similar works. As Switch2 increasingly values third-party games, Reggie believes that if Nintendo can share its experience in optimizing efficiency with third-party developers, it will help more high-quality games successfully land on new platforms and achieve a win-win situation.
